According to reports, the Los Angeles Clippers have no intention of buying out the contract of forward P.J. Tucker despite their failure to secure a trade partner before the recent deadline.
Shams Charania, a trusted source from The Athletic and Stadium, highlighted the challenge posed by Tucker’s $11.5 million player option for the 2024-25 season in buyout negotiations. As a result, Tucker will resume his duties with the Clippers following the All-Star break, aiming to reintegrate into the team’s rotation.
Tucker has been sidelined from gameplay since November 27 despite being in good health. His absence from the court coincided with a scoreless streak in his last six appearances for the Clippers, leading to frustration over his lack of playing time.
In an interview with Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints in December, Tucker voiced his confidence in his ability to contribute positively to any team, expressing a desire to join a competitive team where he can make a meaningful impact.
Despite Tucker’s grievances, the Clippers have remained focused on their performance and have maintained their status as one of the top teams in basketball in recent months. As they prepare to face the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, they find themselves just two games behind the Western Conference leaders.
While Tucker’s defensive prowess and vocal leadership have been assets in the past, the Clippers’ roster, led by stars like Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and James Harden, has not necessarily required his specific contributions.
However, with Leonard currently nursing a left adductor strain and the team being cautious due to his recent injury history, there may be an opportunity for Tucker to re-enter the rotation. Utilizing Tucker in a limited capacity could potentially alleviate Leonard’s workload as the team navigates through the remainder of the season.
