The Los Angeles Dodgers are planning to return Mookie Betts to the infield for the 2025 season, as confirmed by general manager Brandon Gomes. Betts, 32, had originally been slated to play second base in 2024 but was shifted to shortstop due to roster needs and then moved to right field following a hand injury in June. Despite these adjustments, the Dodgers are now focused on moving Betts back to his infield position for the upcoming season.

Betts played a significant portion of the 2024 season in different positions, with 105 innings at second base, 531.1 innings at shortstop, and 338 innings in right field. His defensive performance was strongest at shortstop, where he recorded three defensive runs saved, compared to a -1 at second base and a neutral performance in the outfield. This defensive shift highlights his versatility but also indicates a preference for his skills in the infield.

Offensively, Betts had a solid season, posting a .289/.372/.491 batting line and contributing significantly in the postseason with five hits in the Dodgers’ World Series victory over the Yankees. Betts’ overall performance, both offensively and defensively, makes him a crucial part of the Dodgers’ lineup as they prepare for the 2025 season.

The Dodgers’ current roster includes several capable middle infielders, such as Miguel Rojas, Chris Taylor, Tommy Edman, and Gavin Lux, while the outfield has James Outman and Andy Pages. With Edman and Taylor able to play in the outfield, the decision to move Betts back to the infield suggests potential changes in the Dodgers’ roster. This shift also signals that the team may look for reinforcements, especially with outfielder Teoscar Hernández now a free agent.
