Luis Arraez’s run of 141 plate appearances without a strikeout ended when he struck out against Houston Astros rookie right-hander Spencer Arrighetti on Monday night.
Arraez’s strikeout in the second inning was his first since August 10.
This streak matched Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn’s record for the fifth-longest in the past 40 years. Gwynn also had a streak of 141 plate appearances without a strikeout between the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Padres.
The longest streak is Gwynn’s 170 plate appearances in 1995.
Arraez, the designated hitter, later left the game with an apparent injury.
He was hurt while sliding into home plate in the fifth inning, trying to score from second base on a single but was thrown out. He stayed in the game initially, doubled in the seventh, and then walked off the field carefully after being replaced by pinch-runner Tyler Wade.
