Peter Malnati got a fortunate break and followed it up with a fantastic shot on Sunday. He used a 5-iron to make a birdie on the 17th hole, helping him finish with a 4-under 67 and win the Valspar Championship by two shots. This victory also earns him his first trip to the Masters.
Malnati secured his win by making a par on the final hole. This marks only his second PGA Tour victory. He finished two shots ahead of Cameron Young, who ended with a bogey on the last hole for a 68. Despite several runner-up finishes, Young is still seeking his first win.
During the round, Malnati faced a tough situation on the 16th hole, where his approach shot landed in thick rough. However, he received a free drop due to his foot being on a sprinkler head. This allowed him to make a par and stay tied for the lead.
Then, on the 17th hole, he hit a precise shot to 6 feet for a birdie, while Young struggled with a three-putt bogey.
By winning the Valspar Championship, Malnati not only secures his spot in the Masters but also earns a two-year exemption. Additionally, he is now guaranteed entry into the remaining four $20 million signature events without needing any special assistance.
