Manchester City and Arsenal are reportedly in a tussle for the signature of Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.
According to Football Insider, Manchester City has identified Luiz as a target, impressed by his standout performances this season. The 25-year-old Brazilian has been influential, tallying 10 goals and seven assists across 37 appearances in all competitions.
City manager Pep Guardiola holds a high regard for Luiz, considering him a ‘huge fan’ of the player. Guardiola acknowledges Luiz’s significant improvement since departing from the Etihad Stadium five years ago.
Reflecting on Luiz’s departure and the potential for his return, Guardiola hinted at City’s option to bring him back, emphasizing the talent and quality the midfielder possesses.
Guardiola’s comments in October 2019, as reported by One Football, shed light on the situation.
Despite City’s interest, they face competition from Arsenal, who have been long-term admirers of Luiz. The Gunners made multiple unsuccessful bids, totaling up to £25 million, for Luiz’s services in the summer of 2022.
However, Luiz’s continued impressive form has sustained Arsenal’s interest, with manager Mikel Arteta still keen on securing the midfielder’s signature. Luiz currently has two years remaining on his contract at Aston Villa.
