Marcell Ozuna had a strong game with three hits, including one of four home runs for the Braves in their convincing 9-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
Jarred Kelenic, making his debut as leadoff hitter due to Michael Harris II’s injury, went 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Austin Riley added a pivotal three-run homer in the eighth inning, while Matt Olson also contributed with his 11th home run of the season.
Braves manager Brian Snitker praised Kelenic’s performance: “He fits well in this role. He’s fast, can steal bases, and plays outfield really well. He’s exceeded expectations defensively, and now we’re asking more of him, which he’s ready for.”
Charlie Morton pitched effectively for the Braves, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out eight, and utilizing his pickoff skills effectively.
Ryan Pepiot took the loss for the Rays, giving up five runs on six hits over five innings. He started strong with four scoreless innings but struggled in the fifth, surrendering three home runs.
Kevin Cash, manager of the Rays, acknowledged Pepiot’s effort despite the outcome: “He threw the ball well. Kelenic capitalized on a key changeup, and after that, Pepiot may have tired a bit under the circumstances.”
Ozuna’s home run was part of the Braves’ three-home run surge that turned the tide after trailing 1-0, with Kelenic and Olson also contributing to the offensive outburst.
