The Commanders are anticipated to utilize the second overall pick in the draft to select a quarterback, and they’re poised to complement him with a seasoned veteran on the depth chart.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Marcus Mariota has reached an agreement with the team. The deal spans one year with a base value of $6 million and a maximum value of $10 million.
Mariota served with the Eagles last season, making appearances in three games in relief of Jalen Hurts. He was the starting quarterback for 13 games for the Falcons in 2022 before being replaced by Desmond Ridder.
He could assume a similar role in Washington this year, although the Commanders will be hopeful that any player they draft proves to be a better fit for the position than Ridder.
The Commanders currently have Sam Howell and Jake Fromm on the roster as quarterbacks, suggesting there may be further moves to come as the team finalizes its depth chart for the upcoming season.
