Last season, Marcus Thuram was the top assist provider in Serie A. This year, he is competing for the title of top goal-scorer.
He has made a significant change in his role during his second year in the Italian league. Thuram’s influence as a goal-scorer has been noticed beyond Italy as well.
In the Champions League on Wednesday, he came off the bench to score the winning goal in Inter’s 1-0 victory over Young Boys.
This was Thuram’s eighth goal in 10 matches in all competitions, and it was his first European goal this season, adding to the seven he has scored in eight Serie A matches.
In Serie A, only Mateo Retegui from Atalanta has scored more goals than him, with eight.
“Goals are always important, even more so if they help the team to win,” Thuram said.
Just a couple of months into a long club season that will end with the Club World Cup in June-July for Inter, Thuram is already more than halfway to his goal total from last season, when he finished with 15 goals and 14 assists across all competitions.
Thuram had the most assists in Serie A last season with 13, but he has yet to assist a goal this season. This is partly because his strike partner, Lautaro Martinez, has had a slow start after leading Argentina to victory in the Copa America just a few months after helping Inter win the Serie A title.
His new goal-scoring ability could also be beneficial for France, where Thuram has only scored two goals in 27 matches.
