The Tennessee Titans have decided to start backup quarterback Mason Rudolph for their game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. This move comes after it was confirmed that Will Levis, the team’s primary quarterback, will be sidelined due to a right shoulder injury. The injury occurred during Week 4 when Levis dived for a first down in the Titans’ win over the Miami Dolphins.
Levis has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 AC sprain in his right shoulder, which typically takes four to five weeks to heal. Though Levis is known for playing through injuries, this one will be handled on a week-to-week basis, meaning his availability for future games is uncertain. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Levis might miss additional games beyond Sunday.
To cover for Levis’ absence, the Titans have elevated Trevor Siemian from the practice squad to serve as a backup quarterback on game day. Siemian will return to the practice squad after the game. Levis was able to start during the Week 6 loss to the Colts after the Titans’ bye week, but he admitted that the shoulder injury limited his ability to throw, including one pass that was intercepted.
Levis participated in practice this week but remained limited in his ability to perform. Rudolph and Levis shared practice reps on Friday, with Levis ultimately being listed as questionable for the game. Rudolph, a seven-year NFL veteran, played in Levis’ place during the Week 4 win against Miami, leading the Titans to a 31-12 victory and completing 85 passing yards in that game.
The Titans made additional roster changes ahead of the Buffalo matchup, placing wide receiver Treylon Burks on injured reserve and promoting defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson to the active roster. Paul Kuharsky, an NFL reporter, was the first to report that Rudolph would be starting in place of Levis for the upcoming game.
