Matt Chapman played a big part in the Giants’ comeback win against the Padres, securing a 3-2 victory and their first series win of the season.
“I’m just focused on helping the team win every day,” Chapman said. “I’m doing my best to keep the positive energy up and do my job.”
San Diego was ahead 2-0 before Chapman’s RBI groundout in the sixth inning ended the Giants’ 14-inning streak without scoring.
In the eighth inning, Wilmer Flores and Jorge Soler singled off Jhony Brito, setting up a potential double-play opportunity for the Padres. However, a throwing error by shortstop Ha-Seong Kim allowed Michael Conforto to reach base safely. Chapman then hit a single to right field, bringing Soler home for the go-ahead run.
Despite Chapman’s batting average being .195, his exceptional defense at third base and his leadership qualities continue to uplift the Giants.
“I think Chapman’s leadership is underrated,” Giants pitcher Logan Webb said. “He brings energy and motivation to the team, especially when we’re trailing. He’s always rallying us up.”
Brito, who was charged with the loss, gave up two unearned runs in his second appearance for the Padres since joining from the Yankees.
Camilo Doval closed out the game for the Giants, securing his first save of the season after recording 39 saves last year.
Jake Cronenworth drove in a run for the Padres with an RBI double in the first inning, while Ha-Seong Kim added another run with a single in the sixth.
Jung Hoo Lee, still adjusting to playing at Oracle Park after years in South Korea, faced difficulties in the outfield, losing a ball in the sun during Saturday’s game.
