San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has indicated that star running back Christian McCaffrey is likely to return for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Following McCaffrey’s performance in the team’s hardest practice of the week, Shanahan expressed optimism, noting that McCaffrey’s participation in Wednesday and Thursday practices went smoothly without any setbacks. McCaffrey, who has been on injured reserve due to Achilles tendinitis and a calf issue, appears ready for his season debut if he continues to progress well in a light Friday practice and cross-country travel to Tampa.
McCaffrey’s recovery journey has been extensive. Since his injury in early August, he underwent significant rehabilitation, including consulting a specialist in Germany. Over the 49ers’ bye week, he engaged in simulated practice routines that prepared him for full practice sessions. After returning to practice on a limited basis earlier this week, he participated in Thursday’s critical padded practice, which helped determine his game readiness. Now, with only a light walk-through and travel remaining, the 49ers plan to activate him from the injured reserve on Saturday if all goes well.
The 49ers have been eagerly awaiting McCaffrey’s return, as his presence on the field is expected to energize the team. Quarterback Brock Purdy commented on McCaffrey’s impact, noting that his return has been a morale boost for the team, especially after the bye week. Teammates and coaches have praised his positive influence and the lift he brings to the offense. The 4-4 49ers view McCaffrey’s return as an opportunity to strengthen their lineup as they enter a pivotal stretch in the season.
While McCaffrey is set to play, the extent of his involvement remains uncertain. Shanahan has mentioned that McCaffrey’s game workload will depend on his comfort and readiness as game time approaches. McCaffrey has traditionally been the team’s primary running back when healthy, amassing high-touch seasons.
However, Shanahan emphasized that McCaffrey’s previous injuries are not necessarily a result of overuse and will carefully monitor his conditioning and game readiness on Sunday. In McCaffrey’s absence, Jordan Mason, dealing with a shoulder injury, along with rookies and veterans, provided depth but could also be used to manage McCaffrey’s workload.
Along with McCaffrey, two other key offensive players, wide receivers Jauan Jennings and Deebo Samuel, are expected to return against the Buccaneers, further bolstering the 49ers’ offense. Both players have dealt with recent injuries but are expected to contribute to the game. With these players likely back in action, Shanahan is hopeful for a strong showing as the team aims to turn their season around starting with Sunday’s matchup.
