San Francisco rookie Grant McCray hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Giants defeated the San Diego Padres 6-3 on Saturday.
McCray, who started his major league career on August 14, gave the Giants a 3-2 lead with a home run to right field off Dylan Cease (12-11) with two outs in the second inning. Patrick Bailey and Brett Wisely were on base with singles at the time.
Bailey was on base again with a leadoff walk in the eighth inning when McCray hit another home run to right field off Yuki Matsui for his fifth home run.
The Padres took an early 2-0 lead against Logan Webb (12-9). They loaded the bases with no outs, and Manny Machado hit an RBI single.
They seemed ready for a big inning, but Xander Bogaerts hit into a double play, which allowed another run to score, before David Peralta flied out.
After McCray’s second home run in the second inning, the Giants increased their lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Bailey walked to start the inning and later scored on a double play.
San Diego cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth when Tyler Wade hit a leadoff double and scored on Luis Arraez’s third straight single.
Webb pitched six innings, allowing three runs and 10 hits while striking out three and walking two.
Ryan Walker earned his ninth save.
Cease also pitched six innings, giving up four runs and six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
