Defending champion Daniil Medvedev won his 350th career match to advance to the Miami Open quarterfinals for the fourth consecutive year, defeating Dominik Koepfer 7-6 (5), 6-0 on Tuesday. Top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz also progressed easily with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 23 seed Lorenzo Musetti.
Alcaraz, who beat Musetti in less than 90 minutes, expressed confidence in his game, stating that he’s likely playing his best tennis since last summer. He mentioned that the ankle injury he sustained last month is no longer bothering him.
Alcaraz will face No. 11 seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. Dimitrov defeated No. 8 seed Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) after a tiebreaker controversy involving Hurkacz touching the net with his foot.
In another match, No. 3 seed Medvedev fought through a tight first set before dominating to secure his ninth consecutive victory in South Florida and continue his pursuit of back-to-back titles.
Medvedev trailed 4-0 in the tiebreaker but managed to turn it around and win the set. He credited this momentum for his strong start and eventual win in his milestone match.
Medvedev will play Nicolas Jarry on Wednesday for victory No. 351, while Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner, seeded No. 2, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Christopher O’Connell.
In the women’s event, No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina outlasted No. 8 seed Maria Sakkari 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4 in a challenging match lasting nearly three hours, securing a spot in the semifinals.
Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Grand Slam champion, defeated Yulia Putintseva 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals for the second time this season, marking a significant improvement from her performance in 2023. Azarenka has previously won the Miami Open three times.
