According to a report from Jon Morosi of MLB Network on Tuesday, both the Mets and Yankees are showing interest in the versatile free agent infielder Gio Urshela. Additionally, Morosi noted that the Miami Marlins have also thrown their hat into the ring for Urshela’s services.
However, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com indicates that while the Mets and Yankees are keen on acquiring Urshela, the Marlins and Los Angeles Angels have put forth more enticing offers at the moment.
Urshela, who is 32 years old, faced a setback in his 2023 season due to a fractured left pelvis sustained in June.
Despite this, prior to his injury, he boasted a batting average of .299 along with an on-base percentage of .329 and a slugging percentage of .374, accompanied by two home runs in 62 games, while showcasing his versatility by playing across all four infield positions.
During his last complete season in 2022, Urshela delivered an impressive performance for the Minnesota Twins, slashing .285/.338/.429 with 13 home runs and 27 doubles over the course of 144 games.
Should Urshela join either of the New York teams, it’s likely that he would be considered for a bench role heading into spring training.
With the Mets already securing their first base, second base, and shortstop positions, they appear poised to provide Brett Baty with a significant opportunity to prove himself at third base.
However, if Baty encounters difficulties and Mark Vientos is utilized as a designated hitter, Urshela, upon signing, could emerge as a viable candidate for the regular third base position.
Meanwhile, the Yankees, having previously acquainted themselves with Urshela during his tenure in the Bronx from 2019 to 2021, currently have all four starting infield positions filled, barring any injuries.
