The Miami Dolphins released quarterback Mike White on Sunday, making Skylar Thompson the likely backup for Tua Tagovailoa in the upcoming season.
White was Tagovailoa’s backup in 2023 after joining the Dolphins on a two-year deal last year. During the 2023 season, he played in six games, passing for 74 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Throughout the preseason, White and Thompson competed for the backup role, with White completing 20 of 43 passes for 179 yards and no touchdowns.
Thompson, on the other hand, was 35 of 61 for 346 yards, with three touchdowns and one interception.
Thompson seemed to secure the backup position with his performance in the preseason finale, where he led two touchdown drives and passed for 190 yards in a loss to Tampa Bay.
Thompson, a seventh-round draft pick by Miami in 2022, gained experience in his rookie year due to injuries to Tagovailoa and backup Teddy Bridgewater. He played in seven games and made three starts, including the Dolphins’ playoff game against Buffalo.
Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel praised Thompson’s progress, noting his growth as a leader and his improvement in managing the quarterback position.
White, who was drafted by Dallas in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, previously played for the New York Jets before joining the Dolphins.
