Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa attended team meetings on Tuesday as training camp began, indicating ongoing positive momentum in his contract negotiations.
If Tagovailoa also participates in the first day of workouts on Wednesday, it would further signal progress.
Tagovailoa, entering his fifth season, is currently playing under the contract he signed after being drafted fifth overall in 2020 by the Dolphins.
He aims for a contract similar to quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert, who were drafted in the same year and secured multi-year deals exceeding $200 million after their rookie contracts.
While Tagovailoa did not speak to reporters on Tuesday, teammates emphasized his importance to the team.
“He’s thrilled to be back with all the guys,” receiver Tyreek Hill said. “Seeing him out there, still focused on his work despite the contract situation, has been great.”
Tagovailoa strengthened his bargaining position with a productive and injury-free 2023 season, throwing for 29 touchdowns and leading the league with 4,624 yards.
“I believe Tua deserves an extension,” running back Raheem Mostert said. “He’s shown dedication and leadership since I’ve been playing with him.”
Despite making the playoffs last season, the Dolphins were eliminated in the first round by eventual Super Bowl champions Kansas City, extending their playoff win drought to 24 years.
“His presence is invaluable, especially to me,” Hill added.
