Miami Dolphins rookie edge rusher Chop Robinson used Saturday’s practice as another important learning opportunity in his early training camp.
Robinson, who was the Dolphins’ first-round pick in this year’s draft, aims to make an immediate impact, and the team is already highlighting his role.
With key pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips not participating early in camp due to off-season surgeries, the 21-year-old Robinson is getting plenty of practice with the first team.
“It’s been good,” Robinson said about his first nine practices. “I’ve been learning from the veterans and coaches, and picking up tips from everyone on the team. I stay quiet and focus on learning.”
Robinson finds that the speed of the game is the biggest adjustment from his time at Penn State.
“Even the offensive linemen are fast,” Robinson said. “The speed and intensity here are the biggest changes from college.”
While Robinson was known for his pass rushing in college, he understands that stopping the run is also crucial in the NFL.
“I’m working hard on that and trying to improve every day,” Robinson said. “I love getting to the quarterback, but I have to stop the run first.”
Despite the challenges that come with being a rookie, Dolphins’ first-year defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver praises Robinson’s skills and dedication.
“He’s still learning the finer techniques and fundamentals of the game, but his athleticism and skill set are clear,” Weaver said. “What I appreciate most is his focus and effort. He really thinks about everything he’s being taught and tries to apply what he learns to his game.”
