Following a six-season stint with the Dallas Cowboys, wide receiver Michael Gallup is now on the hunt for a new team.
Reported by Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys officially released Gallup on Friday.
Gallup had inked a substantial five-year, $62.5 million deal in 2022, initially slated to carry a $13.85 million cap hit for the 2024 season. However, as noted by Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News on March 9, despite the Cowboys allowing Gallup to explore trade options, interest was limited among other teams, who anticipated his eventual release.
Opting for a post-June 1 release designation, the Cowboys will realize a $9.5 million savings against the 2024 salary cap, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. Nevertheless, Gallup will still account for $8.7 million against the team’s 2025 cap.
Selected as a third-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 2018, Gallup’s career peaked with a notable 1,107 yards in his sophomore season, yet his performance has waned since then.
In the 2023 season, Gallup’s output dipped significantly, logging a career-low 418 yards despite appearing in all 17 games. His role in the passing game diminished following the acquisition of veteran receiver Brandin Cooks and the emergence of second-year tight end Jake Ferguson.
While Gallup has shown potential as a productive receiver when healthy and given the opportunity, his next team will likely be sought to offer him a more prominent role within their offensive scheme.
With Gallup’s departure, the Cowboys will place even greater reliance on star receiver CeeDee Lamb, fresh off an All-Pro season in 2023.
