A renowned Irishman once emphasized the paramount importance of having options for any fighter. For Ian Machado Garry, the undefeated welterweight contender, the array of choices before him is steadily expanding as he gears up for his next appearance in the Octagon.
Hailing from Dublin, Garry has soared to a remarkable 7-0 record in the UFC, boasting an impressive 14-0 tally overall. His recent conquest, a split decision triumph over the formidable Geoff Neal, has propelled him from the ranks of Cage Warriors to the upper echelons of discussion within the UFC roster. Garry’s dominance in the 170-pound division has firmly set his sights on clinching the coveted world championship title.
Visualizing his trajectory traversing through the path of former three-time title contender Colby Covington, Garry and Covington have engaged in a flurry of social media exchanges, hinting at a potential showdown. However, should circumstances dictate otherwise, Garry remains open to stepping into the ring with any challenger.
Echoing this sentiment is Michael ‘Venom’ Page, a notable addition to the UFC’s welterweight division. Following his recent triumph over UFC veteran Kevin Holland in his Octagon debut, Page expressed his willingness to face Garry.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Page reflected on Garry’s past remarks regarding his bout with Holland, emphasizing the dismissive tone. Nevertheless, Page maintains a respectful stance towards Garry, acknowledging his prowess as a fighter.
“Considering he thought I wasn’t going to get past Kevin [Holland],” Page shared, “There was an interview he did, I’m not sure on what, they asked him his views on me, he was like, ‘Who is he fighting? Oh he’s not going to beat Kevin. No way he gets past Kevin.’ Very dismissive. Which is fine. People ask me about my views, everyone is entitled to their opinion. There’s no need to be angry about it, but now I’ve gotten past and maybe you could stop me?”
“In the UK as well, it’s perfect. That would be a lot of noise there, and I think it’s a good fight. I think he’s ranked seventh, seven is my lucky number,” Page added.
Acknowledging Garry’s significant impact and the reactions he has evoked from fans and peers alike, Page remains confident in his ability to emerge victorious in a potential showdown. He affirms his belief in his skills while extending an invitation to Garry for a compelling match-up in the Octagon.
“He’s a great fighter,” Page remarked. “Again, no need to be negative towards anybody. He’s sparked a lot of emotional reactions from a lot of people, from his personality, his performances, he’s doing good. But I definitely believe I can beat him, so why not?”
