Chase Claypool catches a pass during an NFL football training camp

The Buffalo Bills put receiver Chase Claypool and third-string quarterback Shane Buechele on injured reserve on Tuesday and made several other changes to address their injury issues.

The Bills signed quarterback Ben DiNucci and receivers Damiere Byrd and Deon Cain to one-year contracts. They also released receiver Bryan Thompson.

Claypool’s attempt to restart his career with Buffalo seems to be ending because of a toe injury that kept him out of most of training camp. The Bills had signed Claypool in May after trading Stefon Diggs to Houston and losing Gabe Davis to free agency.

Claypool was with his fourth team in three seasons. The former Notre Dame player had shown promise during his first two seasons in Pittsburgh, with 121 catches for 1,733 yards and 11 touchdowns.

However, he struggled to maintain that level of performance.

Claypool had hoped for a fresh start after spending last season between Chicago and Miami. He mentioned in May that he had learned from past mistakes and was aiming to contribute positively to the team.

DiNucci will replace Buechele, who is out indefinitely due to a neck injury from a preseason game against Chicago. DiNucci was on Denver’s practice squad last season and had played in three games with Dallas in his rookie year in 2020.

With the Bills limiting preseason playtime for Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky, DiNucci is expected to play when the Bills face Pittsburgh on Saturday.
