Mike Shildt faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time since becoming the San Diego Padres manager and showed appreciation to both teams.
Shildt spent 18 seasons with the Cardinals organization, managing them for over three seasons until his abrupt dismissal, despite leading them to three straight playoff appearances and winning the 2019 NL Manager of the Year Award.
After leaving the Cardinals, he joined the Padres in 2022 as a senior advisor before being promoted to manager in October. Shildt acknowledged the emotions involved but expressed gratitude for his time in St. Louis while embracing his current role in San Diego.
Starting as a scout in 2003, Shildt gradually rose through the ranks within the Cardinals organization, becoming the interim manager in 2018 and later taking on the permanent role. Despite his successful tenure, he was let go due to “philosophical differences.”
Despite the parting, Shildt still holds the “Cardinal Way” in high regard, emphasizing the importance of playing the game the right way and respecting the organization’s values.
While Shildt cherishes his time with the Cardinals, he has found a new home with the Padres, where he feels appreciated and respected. He has built strong relationships within the Padres organization and considers San Diego his current home.
Additionally, Shildt’s connection with Padres owner Peter Seidler was evident, as he spoke at a celebration of life for Seidler, who passed away in November.
