Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is keeping his options open regarding the starting quarterback position, even as Russell Wilson recovers from his calf injury. While Tomlin acknowledges that Justin Fields’ strong performance could influence the decision, he is not yet ready to commit to either quarterback.
He emphasized that Wilson’s recovery timeline and the overall season outlook are key factors in his decision-making process. For now, Fields is expected to continue starting, with Wilson’s health being monitored as he gradually increases his practice activity.
Tomlin reflected on a similar situation last season when he stuck with the hot hand, Mason Rudolph, during critical games even after Kenny Pickett was medically cleared to return. When asked what Fields needs to do to secure his spot, Tomlin was clear: play well and win.
As of now, Fields is set to make his fifth consecutive start, while Wilson works his way back into full practice participation. Tomlin mentioned that Wilson’s progress would be evaluated daily, focusing on his ability to move, function, and protect himself during practice sessions.
Regarding other team injuries, Tomlin ruled out linebacker Alex Highsmith and guard James Daniels for the upcoming game. Several other players, including Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson, will be assessed based on their participation in practice. Despite Wilson’s increased workload in practice, Tomlin remains cautious, ensuring that Wilson’s return is carefully managed without rushing the process.
Tomlin spoke positively about the development of his relationship with Justin Fields, which has been forged under the pressure of in-game adversity. He praised Fields’ calm demeanor, particularly in the fourth quarter of their recent loss to the Colts. Tomlin highlighted how these tough moments allow him to build trust and understanding with Fields, a process that he believes cannot be rushed. Fields’ ability to stay composed during difficult situations has impressed the coach.
Fields’ recent performance has been historic for the Steelers, as he became the first player in franchise history to achieve 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, and two rushing touchdowns in a single game. Despite some earlier mistakes, including a costly fumble, Fields rebounded in the second half with three touchdowns. Tomlin noted that these moments have helped solidify his confidence in Fields, validating the quarterback’s steady presence and ability to perform under pressure.
