Mike Tomlin, the coach of the Steelers, said on Monday that Russell Wilson has the upper hand as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback, but Justin Fields will also have a chance to compete.
“We’re open to competition, but I believe it’s important to establish positions… and I say Russell is in the pole position,” Tomlin explained. “Why do I say that? Because during this offseason period, Russell’s experience and process are valuable. He’s been in the NFL for a long time, and his routine is well-established.”
Tomlin added, “Russell’s presence brings synergy and structure to our team, which is beneficial at this time of year. When it’s time to compete in training camp and games, Justin will also get his chance.”
The Steelers made changes to their quarterback lineup recently, signing Wilson and trading for Fields. Kenny Pickett, their first-round pick from 2022, was traded to Philadelphia after Wilson’s arrival.
Wilson, who played for the Broncos last season, has a strong track record with eight playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win during his time with the Seahawks.
Fields, who played for the Bears, has shown potential despite being on struggling teams. He will have the opportunity to learn from Wilson and develop his skills further.
Tomlin expressed excitement about Fields’ potential and the opportunity for him to learn and grow within the team.
