Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick will have an MRI after hurting his hip when he collided with the right-field wall while trying to catch a foul ball on Friday night.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said after the team’s 8-4 win against the New York Mets that Frelick will get the MRI on Saturday morning.
“I can’t even speculate what it is,” Murphy stated. “He had X-rays here, but they were inconclusive.”
Frelick was going for a foul ball hit by Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez that struck the sidewall. He landed awkwardly after hitting the wall down the right field line.
He stayed on the ground for several minutes while Brewers medical staff checked on him. Eventually, Frelick walked slowly toward the dugout and was assisted into the clubhouse.
The NL Central-champion Brewers are set to begin a wild-card playoff series on Tuesday in Milwaukee.
“He’s just a winning player,” Murphy said. “He’s been a winning player. He’s a huge part of this thing and that’ll be a big blow if he can’t play, and you have to lean towards that right now.”
Brewers pitcher Frankie Montas mentioned that Frelick seemed hopeful when they talked after the incident.
“I said, ‘Hey, are you OK?’” Montas recalled. “He told me, ‘Yeah, I’ll be fine.’ I was like, ‘Man, you’re tough, dude.’”
Frelick has a batting average of .259 with a .320 on-base percentage, two home runs, 32 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 145 games this season for the Brewers, who are preparing for the wild-card playoff series on Tuesday.
