Anthony Edwards scored seven of his 36 points in overtime, helping the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Sacramento Kings 130-126 in an NBA Cup game on Friday night. The Timberwolves won despite a historic 60-point performance from De’Aaron Fox.
Fox made a 3-pointer with 1:15 left in overtime to tie the game at 126. But on the Timberwolves’ next possession, Julius Randle scored. Sacramento missed two shots after that, and Edwards sealed the win with a basket with 14 seconds remaining.
Fox had an impressive game, hitting 22 of 35 shots from the field and 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. Sacramento had trailed by 20 points at the start of the fourth quarter but managed to force overtime with Fox leading a strong comeback.
Fox’s 60 points broke the Kings’ franchise record, surpassing Jack Twyman’s 59 points for the Cincinnati Royals in 1960. Fox became the 13th player in NBA history to score at least 60 points in a losing effort.
Randle scored 26 points, and Naz Reid added 16 for the Timberwolves, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jaden McDaniels and Mike Conley each contributed 14 points, Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 10.
Sacramento was down 98-82 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Fox helped the Kings come back with nine points during a 14-0 run to begin the period. Fox’s basket with 7:08 left gave the Kings their first lead at 101-100 since the first quarter.
Fox hit another shot with 39 seconds left to tie the game at 115, and the game went into overtime after McDaniels’ 3-point attempt missed at the buzzer.
Minnesota had struggled from 3-point range in their previous game, shooting just 7 of 39 (17.9 percent) in a loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. But on Friday, they shot 20 of 49 (40.8 percent) from beyond the arc, helping them secure the win.
Domantas Sabonis recorded his 12th straight double-double, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds for Sacramento. Keegan Murray added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Kings played without Malik Monk (right ankle) and DeMar DeRozan (lower back tightness), who both missed a game for the first time this season.
Minnesota led 32-27 at the end of the first quarter after shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 5 of 11 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range. Fox scored 21 points in the first half, tying his season-high for points in a half, but the Timberwolves held a 62-54 lead at halftime. Edwards had 13 points for Minnesota at the break.
