Nearly a month after parting ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky has landed a new team. The 29-year-old is set to join the Buffalo Bills, reuniting with the franchise as Josh Allen’s backup once again. This news was reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, The Athletic’s Tim Graham had reported that Trubisky and the Bills were in discussions to reunite. Trubisky previously spent the 2021 season with the Bills, appearing in six games but never starting.
Trubisky’s stint with the Steelers lasted just two seasons, during which he struggled to address the team’s ongoing quarterback issues.
While he began the 2022 NFL season as Pittsburgh’s starter for four games, he was eventually relegated to the backup position behind Kenny Pickett.
Despite signing a two-year extension with the Steelers before the 2023 NFL season, Trubisky’s performances failed to meet expectations. In five games, including two starts, he threw for 632 yards with five interceptions and four touchdown passes, earning a quarterback rating of 71.9.
His struggles reached a peak during a Week 14 loss to the New England Patriots, prompting calls from Steelers fans for third-string quarterback Mason Rudolph to take over as the starter. Rudolph ultimately led the team to three consecutive victories and an unexpected playoff berth after assuming the starting role in Week 16.
