Ernie Clement hit a three-run home run for the second night in a row and added an RBI single during Toronto’s six-run sixth inning. The Blue Jays defeated the San Francisco Giants 10-6 on Wednesday night.
Clement and Alejandro Kirk both had three hits, while George Springer contributed three RBIs, marking Toronto’s highest run total since a 14-11 loss to Detroit on May 26.
“It’s important to score runs for our pitchers because they’ve supported us all season,” Clement remarked. “We need to provide them with more backing.”
In the ninth inning, Patrick Bailey and Matt Chapman hit consecutive home runs for the Giants.
Chris Bassitt (8-7) battled through five innings, giving up three runs and five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. He has now won five of his last six decisions.
“I thought he improved his use of the breaking ball as the game progressed, and that made a big difference,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “It was a gutsy effort from him.”
Giants’ All-Star Logan Webb (7-7) surrendered seven earned runs, matching his career high. He allowed eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts over five-plus innings, ending a streak of 11 consecutive starts of at least six innings.
“This game was a bit of a stumble, but overall in the first half, Logan has been fantastic,” San Francisco manager Bob Melvin commented. “These things happen from time to time. But I’m proud of the fact that he’s an All-Star.”
Michael Conforto and Thairo Estrada provided RBI singles in the first inning to give the Giants an early 2-0 lead.
Clement’s three-run homer in the fifth inning put the Blue Jays ahead temporarily, but Conforto tied the game in the bottom half with an RBI double.
Toronto’s explosive sixth inning featured six consecutive hits, including RBI singles from Justin Turner, Davis Schneider, Kirk, and Clement. Springer completed the rally with a two-run double and added another RBI double in the eighth.
