Chicago White Sox manager Will Venable announced that rookie right-hander Sean Burke will be part of the team’s starting rotation on Opening Day. Burke, a former third-round draft pick, joins Martín Pérez, Davis Martin, and Jonathan Cannon as the confirmed starters. His strong late-season debut in 2023, where he posted a 1.42 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 19 innings, helped solidify his place in the rotation.
Shuster Sent to Triple-A as Pérez Leads Young White Sox Rotation
To make room for Burke, the White Sox sent left-hander Jared Shuster to Triple-A. Shuster, a former first-round pick, was competing for a rotation spot but struggled in spring training, allowing nine runs in seven innings. Venable suggested Shuster might transition back to a bullpen role in the minors, as he primarily pitched in long relief last season.

Veteran left-hander Martín Pérez, who signed a $5 million free-agent deal, will provide leadership for a young and unproven rotation. Jonathan Cannon, the only returning pitcher with over 75 MLB innings last year, and Davis Martin, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, round out the group. While Pérez offers the most experience, the rest of the rotation remains largely untested at the major league level.
Burke’s Talent Shines, but Command Issues Raise Concerns for White Sox Rotation
Burke impressed in limited major league action last season and showcased strong strikeout ability in Triple-A. However, concerns remain about his command, as he walked 13% of the batters faced in the minors. His spring training performance has been mixed, with five innings pitched, three runs allowed, and an equal number of strikeouts and walks. The White Sox will monitor how well his stuff translates against big-league hitters.
Venable has not yet named a fifth starter, with Bryse Wilson and Shane Smith emerging as the top contenders. Wilson, a veteran long reliever, posted a 4.04 ERA with Milwaukee last season and is out of minor-league options.
Smith, a Rule 5 pick from Milwaukee, has shown promise in Double-A and spring training but remains unproven. Non-roster invitee Justin Dunn is also in the mix after allowing just one run in eight spring innings. The final decision will likely come down to performance in the remaining exhibition games.
