The Philadelphia Phillies placed left-handed reliever José Alvarado on the restricted list for a personal matter before their game on Monday against the Houston Astros.

Alvarado, who is 29 years old, has appeared in 56 games this season with a 4.30 ERA. He has struck out 52 batters and walked 25, and has saved 13 out of 16 opportunities.

To take Alvarado’s place on the roster, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Mercado from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
