The Detroit Tigers have signed right-hander José Urquidy to a one-year, $1 million contract, with a club option for the 2026 season. If the Tigers choose to extend him, the option is valued at $4 million, and he could earn up to $3 million in performance bonuses based on the number of games he starts. The agreement was officially announced by the team on Saturday.
Urquidy, who will turn 30 on May 1, is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent on June 5, 2023. This marks the second time he has had the procedure, with the first occurring in 2017. As he continues his rehabilitation, the Tigers have placed him on the 60-day injured list. Additionally, the team moved right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long to the 60-day IL.

José Urquidy Brings Championship Experience, but Injuries Raise Concerns for the Tigers
Before joining the Tigers, Urquidy spent his entire career with the Houston Astros, where he made his MLB debut in 2019. Over his time with the Astros, he compiled a 27-16 record with a 3.98 ERA across 70 starts and nine relief appearances. He was a key contributor to the Astros’ postseason success, appearing in three World Series and helping the team win the championship in 2022.
Despite his talent, injuries have disrupted Urquidy’s career. In 2023, he was limited to just 16 appearances due to a right shoulder injury. The previous season, he missed the entire year after suffering a right forearm strain in spring training. The Tigers are taking a calculated risk on his recovery, hoping he can return to form and strengthen their pitching staff.
