Alex Pereira’s attempt to make UFC history as the promotion’s first three-division champion came to a disappointing end at UFC Freedom 250 when he suffered a second-round TKO loss to Ciryl Gane. While the defeat halted Pereira’s pursuit of another title, the former middleweight and light heavyweight champion was far more focused on the circumstances surrounding the stoppage than the result itself.

Pereira was dropped early in the second round by a sharp jab from Gane, a strike he acknowledged landed cleanly. However, he argued that the sequence that followed included several illegal blows to the back of his head, which he believes significantly affected his ability to recover and continue fighting. According to Pereira, those strikes played a major role in the outcome and should have been addressed by referee Herb Dean.

Speaking after the fight, Pereira claimed Gane was determined to secure a finish by any means necessary. He accused the French heavyweight of having a history of questionable tactics and suggested the UFC Freedom 250 bout was another example. Pereira stated that while accidental fouls such as eye pokes or groin strikes can occur during fast-paced exchanges, strikes to the back of the head are far more obvious and difficult to excuse.

The controversy has reignited criticism that has followed Gane throughout portions of his career. Some MMA fans have labeled him a dirty fighter, although Gane has previously rejected that characterization. Pereira revealed that concerns about illegal strikes were discussed before the fight, noting that even fellow UFC star Sean O’Malley had witnessed conversations regarding the issue during training camp.

Pereira also explained that he raised the topic directly with officials before the bout. Through his coach and interpreter, Plinio Cruz, he reportedly discussed the rules regarding strikes to the back of the head with Herb Dean. According to Pereira, Dean even reviewed the legal target areas before the contest began. Because of that conversation, Pereira expressed frustration that the referee did not intervene when the alleged illegal strikes occurred.

Pereira Demands Referee Accountability Following Controversial UFC Freedom 250 Defeat

His criticism of Dean was particularly harsh. Pereira accused the veteran official of failing in his responsibility to protect fighters and maintain the integrity of the contest. He argued that referees hold an important position in combat sports and should face consequences when serious mistakes occur. Pereira went so far as to suggest that Dean should have been punished or potentially faced legal repercussions for failing to stop what he viewed as illegal actions.

The Brazilian star also used the incident to highlight what he sees as a broader problem within mixed martial arts. He pointed to the lack of accountability for referees and judges, noting that controversial decisions are rarely overturned and officials are seldom disciplined or required to publicly explain their actions.

Despite the loss, Pereira remains determined to push for change. He called on fellow fighters to unite in demanding greater accountability from referees, arguing that athletes have the collective power to influence how officiating standards are enforced in the future.
