Frankie Montas returned to Yankee Stadium in style as the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with an 8-4 win on Thursday. Nick Martini, Jonathan India, and Spencer Steer each hit home runs to power the Reds’ offense.
Steer’s three-run homer in the fifth inning off Marcus Stroman gave Cincinnati a commanding 5-0 lead. Jake Fraley later added a bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning to extend the Reds’ advantage to 8-2.
Montas, who had been winless in his last four starts, pitched effectively for the Reds. He kept the Yankees scoreless through the first four innings and finished allowing two runs, four hits, and three walks over five-plus innings.
Despite a strong effort from Ben Rice, who hit his first major league home run into the Judge’s Chambers, the Yankees struggled. New York, which started the season 49-21, has now lost 13 of its last 17 games.
Reflecting on his return to form, Montas acknowledged his journey back from injury after a tough stint with the Yankees in 2022. He underwent surgery and made a successful comeback this season, providing a solid performance for the Reds against his former team.
