Elehuris Montero had two hits and brought in three runs to help Colorado secure a 5-4 victory against the San Diego Padres on Monday night, extending the Rockies’ winning streak to five games.
Colorado’s relievers faced some tough situations, walking the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings. However, the Padres couldn’t capitalize on these opportunities and failed to score. Despite drawing 11 walks, including eight in the final three innings, the Padres left nine runners on base in the loss.
“It was a bit of a nail-biter. Things didn’t unfold as planned, but the guys held on,” expressed Rockies manager Bud Black. “Getting that final out and seeing it go our way was a great feeling. The dugout erupted.”
The Rockies have struggled on the road this season, with a 4-16 record away from home. However, this win ended their five-game losing streak at Petco Park, dating back to the start of the 2023 season.
In the ninth inning, Rockies’ pitcher Jalen Beeks walked the bases loaded but managed to prevent any runs and secured his fourth save. He induced Manny Machado into hitting a game-ending double play.
“We’d take Manny up there in that situation every time. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for us,” commented Padres manager Mike Shildt. “Normally, when you draw 11 walks, it puts you in a good position. We just couldn’t come through with the big hit.”
During the game, Rockies right-fielder Jake Cave made a remarkable diving catch on the run to prevent a possible hit. He covered a lot of ground to reach a fading blooper hit by Luis Arraez near the foul line in the ninth inning.
“I was just trying to cover as much ground as I could,” Cave shared about his catch. “I won’t dive unless I think I have a chance to make the catch, especially in that situation. I let the game dictate my actions.”
