Jose Mourinho recently made a playful remark regarding the possibility of Manchester United being declared the champions of the 2017-18 Premier League season if Manchester City were to face penalties and lose points.

Manchester City has enjoyed significant success in the Premier League over the past decade, clinching six league titles during this period. However, the club is currently under scrutiny, facing 115 charges from the Premier League for alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations dating back to 2009.

These allegations have prompted discussions about potential repercussions, including fines, points deductions, or even expulsion from the league.

In the last five years, Manchester City has secured the Premier League title four times, largely due to substantial financial support from Sheikh Mansour.

However, if the club is found guilty of the alleged breaches, it could lead to the forfeiture of titles won in recent seasons, potentially resulting in Manchester United being awarded the 2017-18 Premier League championship.

During the 2017-18 season, under Mourinho’s management, Manchester United finished as runners-up, trailing City by 19 points. However, Mourinho, reflecting on his tenure at Old Trafford during an episode of the FIVE podcast, humorously remarked about the FFP charges, stating (via UtdPlug):

“Maybe there is a chance that we win that league no? ( 2017-18 season.) Because if Man City are found guilty in Financial fair play breaking the rules they lose a few points and maybe we win that title.”

It’s worth noting that Manchester United has not secured the Premier League title since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
