Erik ten Hag’s team scored first with a goal from Christian Eriksen in the 15th minute, but Youssef En-Nesyri equalized in the 49th minute, heading the ball in from close range after a cross from Allan Saint-Maximin.
This was United’s third consecutive draw in this competition. Mourinho was shown a red card after his team was not given a penalty around the hour mark.
“My boys played an amazing match,” Mourinho told TNT Sports. “We played against a team that is at a superior level to us. We finished the game with a center-back playing at right-back and a right-back at left-back.
We had to solve a crazy puzzle, but our performance was extraordinary and I couldn’t ask for anything more from the players.”
Mourinho led United to the Europa League title in 2017 during his 2½ years at Old Trafford and took the Fenerbahce job this past offseason.
In other matches, Richarlison scored a penalty in the 53rd minute for Tottenham, giving them a 1-0 win over Alkmaar and keeping them unbeaten in the competition. Alkmaar’s David Møller Wolfe received a red card in the 85th minute.
Spurs forward Son Heung-min did not play because he was “a bit sore” after Saturday’s 4-1 victory over West Ham in the Premier League, according to manager Ange Postecoglou.
