David Moyes will step down from his position as West Ham manager when his contract ends at the conclusion of the season.
The announcement was made by West Ham on Monday, putting an end to speculations about Moyes’ future. There have been reports that the club has already interviewed other managers.
According to the BBC, Julen Lopetegui, the former coach of Spain and Real Madrid, has agreed to take over as Moyes’ replacement. However, West Ham has stated that the process of finding Moyes’ successor has started and they will not be providing further comments.
Moyes is currently in his second term at the club, having returned in December 2019. During the last 4 1/2 years, he has guided the team to victory in the Europa Conference League last season, marking their first major trophy since 1980. Additionally, he has secured two top-seven finishes in the English Premier League.
David Sullivan, West Ham’s joint-chairman, expressed gratitude towards Moyes for his contributions, saying, “David has been responsible for a period of great progress and success in our history.
We are extremely grateful for all of his hard work, commitment, and dedication to the role. David has been an absolute professional to work with and he will leave with our greatest respect and good wishes — he deserves to be held in the highest esteem for the service he has given to West Ham United.”
The club announced that Moyes will be leaving by mutual agreement. They stated that announcing it before the season ends gives him the chance to receive a proper farewell from West Ham fans.
Moyes expressed his thoughts, saying, “The club has made significant progress since I returned in 2019. When I came back, we were just above the relegation zone, and it has been a great journey to achieve three seasons in Europe.”
Before joining West Ham, Moyes managed Everton, Manchester United, and Sunderland in the Premier League.
Lopetegui’s previous job was at Wolverhampton in the Premier League. He resigned shortly before the start of this season, having been in charge for less than a year.
