Miami Marlins rookie outfielder Dane Myers was expected to have a lot of chances to play in the last two months of the regular season.
However, that opportunity came to an end on Friday when he was put on the injured list for an injury that didn’t happen during a game. Myers broke his left ankle when he kicked a door in frustration after Miami lost 10-6 to Cincinnati on July 13.
Myers was upset after he was called out on strikes by plate umpire Derek Thomas for a check swing without asking for a second opinion from the base umpire.
The Marlins had two runners on base in the eighth inning when Myers challenged the call, argued with Thomas, and was thrown out of the game.
“I think that’s something I need to work on, keeping my emotions in check,” Myers said the day after the incident. “Staying calm and not letting my feelings take over and losing control like I did.”
It hasn’t been decided yet if Myers will be able to play again this season. Before he got hurt, Myers hit two home runs and had 14 RBIs in 40 games.
Myers, who is 28 years old, was playing against left-handed pitchers in a right-field rotation with Jesús Sánchez. But manager Skip Schumaker had started putting him in games against right-handers too because he was playing well.
“He needs to think about things a little more,” Schumaker said. “You’re very lucky to be able to play in the big leagues.
“This is a lesson for him to learn from and something he can grow from. I think he’ll get better because of it.”
