Tobias Myers pitched eight innings without allowing any runs, while Rhys Hoskins and Willy Adames hit home runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night.
Myers, who improved his record to 6-3, didn’t give up a hit until Bryan Reynolds’ single in the fourth inning. The rookie pitcher struck out six, walked one, and threw 103 pitches in his 13th start of the season.
“It felt like everything was working for me tonight,” Myers said. He praised catcher William Contreras for his role in guiding him through the game, saying, “William was fantastic in setting up in the right spots. He’s reading the hitters on every pitch, and I just trusted him to hit my spots.”
This was the second time this year that Myers threw eight scoreless innings in a game.
Manager Pat Murphy commented on Myers’ performance, saying, “Tobias was aggressive. Our defense played well behind him.
We came through with timely hitting. That was the key. We stuck with it for the entire nine innings.”
Sal Frelick, who had a productive game with three hits including a double and a triple, praised Myers’ pitching style, saying, “We’re not surprised anymore. When he takes the mound, we know he’s going to attack the strike zone.”
The Brewers, leading the NL Central division, scored twice in the first inning against Martín Pérez (1-5) with two-out hits from Adames and Frelick.
In the fourth inning, Contreras doubled to drive in two more runs, extending Milwaukee’s lead to 4-0. Hoskins then hit a 417-foot home run into the second deck of left field in the fifth inning, increasing the Brewers’ lead to 5-0. They added another run in the seventh inning on Andruw Monasterio’s RBI single.
Adames sealed the victory with a three-run homer in the eighth inning, completing Milwaukee’s scoring for the night.
