NASCAR’s return to road courses always attracts specialized drivers.
This Sunday’s race at Circuit of the Americas marks the first of five on road or street tracks this season. It’s also the Cup Series debut for Shane van Gisbergen, who made a splash in NASCAR last season in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, renowned road racer Kamui Kobayashi of Japan returns to a familiar track at COTA, which he’s raced on before in Formula One and endurance racing.
Van Gisbergen, known for his versatility, will race for Kaulig Racing, tackling both the Xfinity Series race on Saturday and his first of seven Cup races this year. “I’m loving it,” said Van Gisbergen of his Xfinity series experience. “Every week is a new challenge, and I’m learning a lot.”
His surprise win in Chicago last year, followed by a strong performance in Indianapolis, propelled him into NASCAR full-time with Trackhouse Racing. Now, he’s ready to tackle the road courses.
“I was more excited about the ovals, because it was new. But I know I’ll do well on these tracks,” he said confidently.
For Kobayashi, this isn’t his first NASCAR rodeo. After finishing 33rd in Indianapolis last year, he’s better prepared for COTA, a track he’s raced on multiple times before.
“I’ve spent a lot of time preparing in the simulator,” Kobayashi said. “I’m more confident this time around.”
Both drivers bring a wealth of experience to the table, with Kobayashi having competed in F1 and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while Van Gisbergen is a former Australian Supercars champion. They’re poised to make an impact at COTA this weekend.
