Celtics star Jaylen Brown exited Wednesday’s road game against the San Antonio Spurs early after receiving a pair of technical fouls, resulting in an ejection with 3:38 left in the second quarter. The All-Star wing had recorded eight points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes before leaving the court.
The sequence began when Brown believed Spurs guard Stephon Castle fouled him on a turnover along the sideline. He argued with referee Tyler Ford, earning the first technical, and shortly after, a second referee, Suyash Mehta, assessed him another technical, leading to his dismissal.
Brown’s frustration was visible both on the court and on social media. Minutes after leaving, he posted on X expressing his displeasure, echoing sentiments he shared earlier in the season after another controversial game against the Spurs at TD Garden on January 10. At that time, he criticized officiating openly, calling referees “terrible” and he was later fined $35,000 by the NBA.

Celtics Struggle Without Brown Amid Injuries and Controversial Ejection Against Spurs
Boston, already shorthanded without Payton Pritchard (neck spasms) and Nikola Vucevic (finger fracture), struggled in Brown’s absence and fell 125-116. Teammates Sam Hauser and Baylor Scheierman helped guide him off the court during the ejection, marking the second in Brown’s 10-year career, his first occurring in 2023 against the New York Knicks.
Brown’s ejection highlights the ongoing tension between players and officials over physical play and foul calls, especially in high-stakes matchups. The Celtics will now turn their attention to Thursday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, seeking to regroup and overcome the challenges posed by injuries and disciplinary setbacks. Brown’s performance and leadership will be critical as Boston aims to bounce back in a competitive Eastern Conference schedule.
This incident underscores both Brown’s fiery competitive nature and the impact his absence can have on a team already facing multiple roster challenges.
