N.C. State quarterback Grayson McCall was taken off the field on a cart after being placed in a brace following a hit in the first quarter that knocked his helmet off and the football loose during the game against Wake Forest.
McCall had just scrambled for about 9 yards when he was tackled by several Wake Forest defenders, including Eldrick Robinson II. While players chased after Wake Forest’s fumble return, medical staff quickly rushed onto the field as the game continued.
This was McCall’s first game back since he had to leave with an injury during the first half on September 14 against Louisiana Tech.
He is in his first year with the Wolfpack after transferring from Coastal Carolina, where he had a record-breaking career. He briefly lifted his head while on the cart.
McCall returned as the starting quarterback after an unspecified injury last month, though he has a history of concussions. On the Wolfpack’s first play, he was hit after throwing an incomplete pass but seemed unfazed.
Wake Forest’s Evan Slocum returned the fumble 88 yards to the N.C. State 2-yard line. The Demon Deacons then scored to take a 10-0 lead just over six minutes into the game.
