On Friday, Netflix achieved a major milestone with the live broadcast of the Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson fight, which attracted an unprecedented 60 million households tuning in worldwide. The event peaked with 65 million concurrent streams, making it a “record-breaking night” for the streaming giant. Netflix also celebrated the impressive viewership of the co-main event, featuring Amanda Serrano against Katie Taylor, which garnered nearly 50 million households. Netflix hailed this fight as potentially the most-watched professional women’s sporting event in U.S. history.

In partnership with Joe Hands Promotion, Netflix expanded the reach of the event by distributing it to over 6,000 bars and restaurants across the United States. This collaboration set a new record for the commercial distribution of a combat sports event, marking a historic achievement for the company, which has been in the entertainment business for over 50 years. The event’s success extended beyond its live streaming, with social media buzz also playing a major role.

On social media, the fight was a global talking point, with #PaulTyson becoming the top trending topic worldwide on X (formerly Twitter), while #Serrano ranked highly in several countries, including the U.S., Brazil, Spain, and Canada. The fight generated massive financial success, surpassing $18 million in ticket sales, making it the most profitable combat sports event outside of Las Vegas in U.S. history. This figure more than doubled the previous record for boxing and MMA ticket sales.

Taking place in Arlington, Texas, the fight saw Jake Paul, the former YouTube star, defeat Mike Tyson, the undisputed heavyweight champion. The build-up to the fight was intense, especially after Tyson slapped Paul during the weigh-in, following an altercation where Paul allegedly stepped on Tyson’s toe. Tyson, in pain from the incident, expressed his frustration and suggested it may have been intentional, adding to the tension and drama leading into the fight.

Despite the high viewership and financial success, the event was not without its problems. Fans who tuned into the live broadcast on Netflix experienced technical difficulties, such as buffering and freezing. This wasn’t the first time Netflix faced such issues during a live event, as similar technical problems occurred last year with the delayed reunion of *Love Is Blind* season four. These recurring glitches raised concerns about Netflix’s ability to handle the technical demands of live event broadcasting.
