The Brooklyn Nets are already making significant moves in the offseason, aiming to avoid repeating past disappointments in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. General Manager Sean Marks wasted no time in addressing the team’s coaching staff, recognizing the need for change. This decision follows a season where the Nets fell short of expectations despite making the playoffs.
Jacque Vaughn, who took over as interim head coach in 2019-20, has been let go after a stint that saw mixed results. Despite initially exceeding expectations, Vaughn’s coaching record ultimately didn’t meet the franchise’s standards. His departure opens the door for a new coaching direction for the Nets.
Kevin Ollie briefly took over from Vaughn but failed to secure a permanent position. Instead, the Nets have turned to Jordi Fernandez, the head coach of the Canadian National team, to lead the team moving forward. Fernandez aims to assemble a strong coaching staff capable of organizing and guiding the team effectively.
As part of the coaching overhaul, former Michigan standouts Juwan Howard, Steve Hetzel, and Jay Hernandez have been brought in to join Fernandez’s staff. Hetzel assumes the role of lead assistant coach, signaling a commitment to building a well-rounded and experienced coaching team.
However, this restructuring also means parting ways with Ronnie Burrell and Will Weaver, indicating a desire for fresh perspectives within the coaching ranks.
With the coaching staff now set, attention turns to the upcoming off-season decisions regarding player acquisitions through free agency and the draft. These moves will be critical as the Nets aim to position themselves as genuine contenders in the Eastern Conference and beyond.
