Quarterback Joe Burrow is mostly healthy to start this season, which is the first time since his rookie year in 2020 that he’s been in this good shape at the start of a season.
This is a major reason for the Cincinnati Bengals to be optimistic as they get ready for their opener against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
The big question for the Bengals is whether Burrow’s top receiver, Ja’Marr Chase, will be able to play. Chase, who is hoping for a big contract extension, missed a lot of training camp while waiting for that to be sorted out.
Chase practiced this week, which is a positive sign for the Bengals.
Burrow, who won a national championship with Chase at LSU in 2019, said he believes that if Chase plays on Sunday, he will be both physically and mentally prepared.
Chase still has two years left on his contract but is hoping for a new deal that reflects his status as one of the top receivers in the NFL.
“I’m not getting involved in his business. I’m going about mine and trying to get better every day and trying to get ready for Sunday,” Burrow said. “I know he’s doing what he needs to do to be ready to go, if need be. I’m just doing what I got to do.”
Coach Zac Taylor mentioned that the Bengals have a backup plan in case Chase is not available.
Burrow is returning after tearing a ligament in his throwing hand last November 16 and having surgery. The Bengals finished last in the AFC North with a 9-8 record last season.
