Alvin Kamara explained simply why he’s practicing with the New Orleans Saints despite not having a new contract. He wants to avoid fines and show loyalty to his coaches and teammates who aren’t involved in his salary talks.

“I’m not dumb. I’m not giving up any money. I’m trying to get paid,” Kamara said after the Saints’ first training camp practice.

He acknowledged that contract disputes happen in the NFL and emphasized that he wouldn’t let it affect his commitment to the team or his teammates.

Kamara, who has been a standout with over 10,000 yards and 77 touchdowns in seven NFL seasons, made clear his displeasure with the Saints’ management when he skipped a mandatory practice in June. His teammates were unsure if he would attend training camp or hold out, as other players have done in similar situations.

Saints quarterback Derek Carr praised Kamara for showing up despite his contract concerns, saying it speaks volumes about his dedication to the team.

Kamara still has two years left on his contract, but none of his salary for 2025 is guaranteed, meaning the Saints could save money by releasing him next year if his performance or health decline this season.

Kamara mentioned he isn’t asking for more money, just a longer commitment. He expressed a desire to finish his career with the Saints and said he’d rather retire and relax in Africa, where his mother is from, than play elsewhere in the NFL.

In recent years, NFL teams have been cautious about giving big contracts to running backs, especially those in their 30s.

On Tuesday, General Manager Mickey Loomis said he was happy Kamara showed up on time and noted the running back, who turns 29 soon, is in great shape.

Loomis didn’t talk about specific contract talks but mentioned they have to consider the market’s ups and downs for different positions. He said the Saints need to manage salaries smartly across the team, especially after missing the playoffs for three years.

“Our team’s performance hasn’t met expectations,” Loomis said. “It’s not just about individual players but how we improve as a team and win more games.”

Kamara understands this and doesn’t take it personally. He also believes his ability as both a runner and receiver sets him apart from other running backs.
