Karl-Anthony Towns is expected to make his debut for the New York Knicks on Sunday during their preseason opener against the Charlotte Hornets. Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau announced plans to feature the starters, including Towns, allowing fans to see the potential of the dynamic point guard-center pairing with Jalen Brunson. Brunson expressed eagerness to gauge the team’s current status, highlighting that each practice serves as a test to measure their progress and readiness.

Despite joining the team late due to trade finalization issues, Towns has actively participated in training camp, displaying his readiness to compete in Charlotte. Thibodeau indicated that the team is still finalizing its rotation for the upcoming game, emphasizing the need for consultation with the medical staff regarding player health. Towns, who underwent knee surgery in March, is being closely monitored, but Thibodeau reassured that discussions about player health are routine during training camp.

Towns missed three training camp sessions while awaiting his trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves, which was delayed by salary-matching negotiations for another player. However, he remains unfazed by the missed practices, crediting his rigorous offseason training for his preparedness. He expressed confidence in his physical condition, stating that his prior work will allow him to handle the demands of the upcoming season effectively.

In terms of lineup, Thibodeau hinted that returning players Josh Hart and OG Anunoby will likely be starters, joined by newcomer Mikal Bridges. Brunson acknowledged that integrating new players and adjusting to the new system will be essential, emphasizing the importance of getting everyone up to speed to ensure a cohesive unit. He underscored the necessity of maintaining focus amid the team’s new dynamics.

The anticipated pick-and-roll combination between Brunson and Towns has generated excitement, positioning the Knicks among the top duos in the league alongside pairs like Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia and Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray in Denver. However, Brunson cautioned that the team should expect a learning curve as they adapt to one another. He stressed the importance of having the right mindset to overcome challenges and improve day by day.
