Garrett Crochet is a top candidate to be traded during the 2024-25 offseason, with several teams showing interest in the White Sox left-hander. Recently, the New York Mets have joined the list of teams looking into trading for Crochet, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The Mets have a clear need for starting pitching, especially with Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana all set to become free agents.
Although the Mets have the financial resources to go after high-profile free agents, their general manager, David Stearns, prefers to make smart trades rather than relying solely on big free-agent signings, something he successfully did while with the Brewers.
Crochet is entering his second year of arbitration and is expected to earn just $2.9 million in 2025, making him a very affordable option for the Mets. This would allow New York to use their budget to improve other areas, such as further strengthening their pitching staff or pursuing big-name players like Juan Soto.
However, trading for Crochet comes with its own challenges. The White Sox are looking for a significant return in exchange for him, as he is their most valuable trade asset following Luis Robert’s underwhelming 2024 season. With many teams interested, the White Sox can afford to be selective in choosing the best trade package.
Chris Getz, the White Sox GM, has been clear that the team is looking for position players in return. “We certainly need to improve our offense,” he said.
The Mets have a strong farm system, ranked 10th by Baseball America and 13th by MLB Pipeline. While other teams might offer higher-quality prospects, the Mets have several promising position players who could be part of a trade for Crochet.
Top prospects like Brett Baty, who has had limited success in the majors but attracted interest at the trade deadline, could be a key part of a potential deal.
Other notable names include Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio, though Mauricio missed the 2024 season due to a torn ACL. Among the Mets’ untested prospects, Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Ryan Clifford, and Carson Benge are ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects.
To get the White Sox’s attention in the Crochet trade talks, the Mets would likely need to offer at least two of these players. However, if another team offers a standout, elite prospect, they could have the edge in the race for Crochet.
