Gleyber Torres, the second baseman for the New York Yankees, had to leave Friday night’s game against the Houston Astros. He got hit on his right thumb by a fast 93.1 mph pitch.
It happened in the seventh inning when Tayler Scott hit Torres with a pitch. Torres fell and was in pain for a few minutes. He got checked by a trainer and then walked to first base.
Torres stayed in the game for the bottom of the seventh inning but was replaced by Jahmai Jones after a visit to the mound.
The Yankees’ manager, Aaron Boone, said that X-rays showed nothing serious. Torres had to leave because his thumb started to swell up. Torres said he’s feeling alright and hopes to play on Saturday.
“I feel good,” he said. “It’s a bit sore right now. But I’m happy the X-rays came back negative. It’s just a little sore where the ball hit me, but nothing too bad.” Torres didn’t get any hits in the game, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts before leaving.
