New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe left Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels because of a bruised left foot.
Volpe fouled a ball off his foot in the second inning and then fouled out. He continued playing for five more innings in the rain before being replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera in the eighth inning, when the Angels had built a 9-1 lead. The Angels won the game 9-4.
The Yankees said that Volpe was checked by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and that X-rays showed no fractures.
“I think he’s going to be fine,” manager Aaron Boone said after the game.
In his second season, after hitting .209 as a rookie, Volpe is currently batting .257 with 11 home runs and 45 RBIs.
Before the All-Star break, Volpe was batting .245, but he has hit .320 (24 for 75) in 18 games since the break.
