Newcastle delivered another heavy defeat to Tottenham at St. James’ Park, with Alexander Isak scoring twice to secure a 4-0 victory for Eddie Howe’s team in the Premier League on Saturday.
Isak and Anthony Gordon both found the net within a short span of 95 seconds in the first half, continuing Newcastle’s dominance over Spurs after last season’s 6-1 home win.
Isak, who also scored twice in that previous victory, completed a standout performance with his second goal in the 51st minute, bringing his tally to 17 league goals and 21ral this season. Gordon provided his second assist of the game with a corner kick that Fabian Schar headed home for the fourth goal in the 87th minute.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, who took over after last season, had admitted earlier in the week that he hadn’t reviewed the tape of the 6-1 loss, and he’s likely to feel similarly about this defeat.
Tottenham’s defense faltered repeatedly, with star defender Micky van de Ven slipping on two occasions, allowing Isak and Gordon to breach the defense and score.
The third goal came after Bruno Guimaraes won possession for Newcastle near their area and then played a long ball for Isak to run onto. Isak calmly finished past goalkeeper Vicario to extend Newcastle’s lead.
Isak has now scored in six consecutive league home games and is the first Newcastle player since Alan Shearer in 2003-04 to reach 20 goals in all competitions in a topflight season.
Schar then capitalized on Gordon’s corner to head home from close range, sealing the comprehensive victory.
The heavy defeat saw Tottenham drop below Aston Villa into fifth place, trailing Unai Emery’s side on goal difference. Newcastle sits in sixth place, 10 points behind Villa and Tottenham.
